6-8th Grade Literacy Curriculum

Savvas: MyPerspectives

MyPerspectives was adopted and approved by the board in the spring of 2022 with implementation starting in the fall of 2022.

MyPerspectives® English Language Arts  is a comprehensive literacy program designed to support student learning and growth. Lessons are engaging and meaningful, helping students take ownership of their learning through a mix of whole-class, small-group, and independent activities that connect to real-world experiences.

As students read a variety of relevant and diverse texts, they participate in thoughtful discussions, collaborate with classmates, and build strong communication skills. Through this work, students develop strategies and habits that support success in school and beyond.

Oregon Literacy Standards

In June 2019, the State Board of Education adopted the Oregon English Language Arts and Literacy Standards, which represent K-12 learning expectations for students in English Language Arts. The Oregon Department of Education collaborated with Oregon educators to identify and develop high quality standards in order to prepare Oregon students with the important knowledge and literacy skills necessary to succeed for college and career readiness. The Standards are the foundation English Language Arts classes that prepare students for the Oregon Diploma.

Assessment

In grades 6–8, students take the Renaissance STAR Reading assessment three times per year (fall, winter, and spring) to monitor their progress in reading. This assessment focuses on key areas such as reading comprehension and overall reading achievement.

In addition, some students may participate in Passage Oral Reading (POR) assessments, which measure reading fluency and accuracy. Together, these assessments help teachers understand each student’s reading strengths and areas for growth, so they can provide targeted support and instruction.

These measures are also used for ongoing progress monitoring, allowing teachers to regularly track growth in foundational skills, fluency, and comprehension, and to adjust instruction or interventions to meet individual student needs.
