K-5 Literacy Curriculum

McGraw Hill Wonders

Wonders was adopted and approved by the board in the spring of 2022 with implementation starting in the fall of 2022.

Wonders is an evidence-based K–5 English Language Arts program designed to actively engage students in reading, writing, and speaking. It provides meaningful opportunities for students to explore content, express their thinking, and build skills at the right time in their learning journey to support strong outcomes for all learners. Grounded in the Science of Reading, Wonders draws on decades of literacy research and aligns instruction to all strands of Scarborough’s Reading Rope, ensuring comprehensive, research-backed literacy development.

Oregon Literacy Standards

In June 2019, the State Board of Education adopted the Oregon English Language Arts and Literacy Standards, which represent K-12 learning expectations for students in English Language Arts. The Oregon Department of Education collaborated with Oregon educators to identify and develop high quality standards in order to prepare Oregon students with the important knowledge and literacy skills necessary to succeed for college and career readiness. The Standards are the foundation English Language Arts classes that prepare students for the Oregon Diploma.

Assessment

In grades K–5, the Renaissance STAR literacy assessment is conducted three times per year (fall, winter, spring) using a combination of foundational skill measures, fluency, and comprehension. In the early grades, students are assessed in key building blocks of reading, including Letter Names (LN), Letter Sounds (LS), Phoneme Segmentation (PS), and Expressive Nonsense Words (ENW), alongside STAR Early Literacy to provide an overall measure of early reading development.

As students progress, assessment shifts to include Passage Oral Reading (POR) to measure fluency and accuracy, in combination with STAR Early Literacy and later STAR Reading to evaluate comprehension and overall reading achievement.

These measures are also used for ongoing progress monitoring, allowing teachers to regularly track growth in foundational skills, fluency, and comprehension, and to adjust instruction or interventions to meet individual student needs.
