Edward V. Rickenbacker was born in Columbus, Ohio, in 1890. When he was 13, his father was killed in a construction accident. After this traumatic accident Eddie dropped out of school never to come back But he kept his education up by reading and correspondence courses.

He also took on series of 12-hour-a-day jobs to help support the family. He soon found he was extremely talented in the field of the automobile industry.In 1906 he went to work for Lee Frayer, a pioneer auto builder and racer. At 17, he was in charge of testing the Columbus Buggy Co.'s new models, some of which he helped design.
