About the River System

Oaklea is a school-within-a-school. Each branch is designated by a river name (Columbia, Santiam, Willamette). Each river is a cooperative team that consists of interdisciplinary teachers and specialists. The river system is used to make student activity decisions, to group staff and students, and to aid in lunch rotation. This is an unique system with many benefits. A student's "river" is determined by their Homeroom teacher. For example, if a student has a Santiam homeroom teacher, then they are a Santiam student. There is a list of teachers and rivers found on the Oaklea Staff page. Beginning with the 1998-99 school year, all fifth grade teachers and students are now located in the "Five Rivers" hallway. Sixth grade students stay within their designated river for core classes. Both these aspects limit 5th and 6th grade students from travelling across the building which makes it easier for them to get to their classes. During 7th and 8th grade, students travel more outside of river for their classes (for example, to math and science specialists).

About Homeroom

Incoming and new students are assigned to a homeroom teacher who will be their adult mentor for their time at Oaklea. Homerooms, made up of 5th through 8th graders, are created to provide an environment of diversity and understanding. Homerooms also provide a place for students mentoring students.

A student's "river" is determined by their homeroom teacher. For example, if a student has a Santiam homeroom teacher, then they are considered to be a Santiam student. See River System for more explanation about our school-within-a-school philosophy.

Homerooms meet daily for the first 7 minutes Monday, Wednesday and Friday. This is where the daily announcements are heard and any other "business" is taken care of. Homerooms then meet for an additional 30 minutes on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Homeroom time includes academic counseling, notebook check, and study hall, as well as for "homeroom activity" and team building activities. Some homeroom days are used for a "River Activity" which involves all the Homerooms from that River in a competition or cooperative activity.

See Daily Time Schedule for more information on how the Homeroom schedule is used to determine lunch times.
